Columbia River Gorge Downwind Runs
The Columbia River Gorge offers some of the best downwind surfski runs in the world, thanks to its unique geography and wind patterns. Downwinding in the Gorge is exhilarating and can be less challenging that than similar ocean runs since the waves almost always come from behind you. Here are a few notable runs:
- The "Home Valley Run": Starting at Bob’s Beach and ending at Home Valley, this run is about 5.5 miles long. This run can have a bit of everything, the ability to catch a sternwheeler wake for the first third of the run, long large waves on the Oregon side, and challenging mix conditions toward the end of the run(red).
- The "Drano Run": This run starts at Drano Lake and ends at the White Salmon River, covering around 7.5 miles. It's a bit more challenging due to the stronger winds and waves in the Swell city section, but it's perfect for those looking to test their skills(blue).
- The "Gorge Downwind Champs" race course: Starting at Home Valley and ending at Hood River Waterfront Park. It's about 13.5 miles long and offers a thrilling ride with consistent downwind conditions(green).
- The Sternwheeler: Even when there is no wind the Gorge has its own wave machine that runs twice a day during the summer. If you haven’t ever done it, you need to add this to your bucket list(yellow).
- Farther east: Depending on conditions and the group abilities and desires we can venture farther east to Rufus. These runs can be quite challenging and are for experienced paddlers only(not shown).
Each of these runs offers a unique experience, with varying distances and difficulty levels. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced downwind paddler, the Columbia River Gorge has something to offer.
